Village of Hodgkins COVID-19 Announcement March 12, 2020

This is a community alert from Hodgkins Village President Noel Cummings and the Hodgkins Police Department. In recent days, there have been new developments in the course of the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, epidemic. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this virus can potentially cause serious respiratory illness when contracted, especially among older adults and people with chronic underlying illness or compromised immune systems, and is considered a “public health emergency of international concern.” A number of simple precautions provided by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), can greatly reduce risk to individuals and households if followed. According to the CDC, as of today, for the majority of people, the immediate risk of being exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19 is still thought to be low. This is, of course, an ever-evolving situation, so it’s important to stay informed about changes on a daily basis. More information may also be obtained on the CDC’s website, CDC.gov.

Here are some basic tips from the CDC for protecting yourself and family members:

  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Stay home when you are sick, unless your condition worsens, or if you are an older adult or have a compromised immune system. In such case, seek medical attention.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. Be prepared if your child’s school or childcare facility is temporarily dismissed.

In case of an outbreak in our community, protect yourself and others by doing the following:

  • Stay home and speak to your healthcare provider if you develop fever, cough, or shortness of breath
  • Keep away from others who are sick
  • Limit close contact with others as much as possible, by about 6 feet.

If you develop warning signs for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately. Warning signs include:

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
  • New confusion or inability to get up
  • Bluish lips or face

This list is not all-inclusive. Please consult your medical provider for any other symptom that is severe or concerning.

People who are mildly ill with COVID-19 may be instructed by their doctor to isolate at home during their illness.
In such a case, do not go to work, school, or public areas, and avoid public
transportation. For additional guidance, talk to your healthcare provider.

You may also contact the Illinois Department of Public Health by calling (800) 889-3931 or e-mailing dph.sick@illinois.gov with specific questions about COVID-19.

If we all work together and focus on good health practices, we can get through this as a community. Remember that the Village of Hodgkins and the Hodgkins Police Department are here for your needs, 24/7. As always, if you should find yourself in a health emergency, call 911 or 708-352-4476. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
